    The use of a vocabulary booklet to enhance English comprehension in A1 level students

    The purpose of this research is to define the influence of a vocabulary Booklet on ESL learners who start their studies at A1 level in gaining or improving their English comprehension performance. Along with the increasing requirement of being competent in English both in the academic and professional situations, it is obvious that there should be a way to solve existing problem of poor comprehension level of non-native speakers which means that there is a need to create new approaches for the development of reading and comprehend. Upon which a combination of methods is employed the purpose is to present a comprehensive report on the effect of a vocabulary booklet on students’ comprehension. The target variable concerns itself with skimming and scanning strategies and the effect variable is the reading comprehension. This study will employ the direct method approach where quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques will be combined in a way that both data collection methods will achieve a holistic goal of assessing the booklet’s effectiveness. The straightway approach including the pre-assessment, usage logs, surveys, interviews, focus group and the observations will be employed. This study's context consists of 98 technology students from different technologies and backgrounds from “Instituto Superior Tecnológico Rumiñahui”, who are the main subjects and leaders of the students' society. The study pointed out the necessity to devise an innovative solution for the recurrent reading and comprehension problems and indicated the vital role of the innovative approaches. Therefore, this chapter forms a basis to more discourse on the core elements of the methodology as well as emphasizes the necessity of efficient a vocabulary booklet as the basic unit for a better understanding and learning of the English language.
