Abstract
The objective of this research was to determine whether storytelling can help improve the speaking skills of ninth-grade students at the A2 level. The study was based on the hypothesis that storytelling is an effective strategy for enhancing students’ oral communication abilities. A mixed-methods research approach was employed. Quantitative data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests, while qualitative data were gathered through interviews conducted with three English teachers and participating students to obtain their opinions and suggestions. The theoretical methods applied included analysis–synthesis and inductive–deductive reasoning. The initial findings revealed that students experienced difficulties in oral expression, characterized by hesitation, pronunciation errors, limited vocabulary, and low motivation. To address these challenges, students participated in a series of storytelling-based activities, including guided storytelling exercises. At the end of the intervention, they created and presented their own stories. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in students’ speaking performance, particularly in terms of fluency, vocabulary range, and confidence. Moreover, students showed increased motivation and a greater willingness to communicate in English. Their participation and interaction during conversational tasks also improved considerably. In conclusion, the integration of storytelling as a communicative approach not only promotes linguistic development but also fosters student autonomy and creativity. These findings highlight the value of narrative-based activities in A2-level classrooms and suggest their potential for broader application in English language teaching.
