Abstract
As students mostly lack the foundation in communication skills due to motivation; this study looks for the effectiveness of the task-based approach (TBA) in laying a solid foundation and motivating 1st year BGU students to improve their communication skills at a high school. It aims to evaluate if TBA can improve the speaking skills of pre-intermediate English students through the application of tasks which demand collaborative, and interactive actions. A pre-test and post-test measurement design assesses oral language skills before and after the TBA intervention, focusing on fluency, accuracy, and pronunciation. Qualitative data is collected from classroom observations, student interviews, and focused groups to assess student engagement. and the effectiveness of the TBA approach. The results show that the quantitative analysis depicts significant improvements in the three areas of oral language skills measured after the TBA intervention. Qualitative data corroborates these findings in showing increased engagement, collaboration, and students' confidence in speaking English. Students reported that they were more motivated to participate in speaking activities and showed a greater willingness to communicate in the target language. Overall, this study provides strong evidence that TBA is effective in building a solid foundation at motivating pre-intermediate students to take on communication skills. This study supports the effectiveness of task-based language teaching in improving the speaking skills of A1-level students. These findings suggest that activity-based language teaching can be an alternative to traditional grammar teaching to assist language learners' communication skills and provide a strong foundation for further language development.
